High Tatras with kids: what little legs can manage
Easy trails, rainy-day attractions and winter fun — proven by families who keep coming back to us.

The Tatras are made for family holidays: cable cars shorten the climbs, distances are small, and when the weather doesn't cooperate, there's a surprising amount of fun waiting below the mountains. We're a family-run apartment house and most of our guests come with children — these are the trips that win them over.
The big advantage is that everything in the Tatras is close together. While in bigger ranges you spend half the holiday on transfers, here the Tatra Electric Railway takes you from one resort to the next in minutes — and for kids the train ride is an experience in itself. A base in the middle of the Tatras, like Nový Smokovec, saves both nerves and time.
Easy trails children can manage
No need for grand goals — children are thrilled by even a short walk if there's something to discover along the way: a roaring stream, a stone bridge, a curious squirrel or a hut with a sweet reward at the end. Here are four trails we've been recommending to our families for years, reliable from spring to autumn.
Hrebienok and the Studený potok waterfalls
The funicular is an experience in itself. From Hrebienok it's a comfortable 20–30 minutes to the waterfalls, and at Rainer's hut — the oldest in the Tatras — you can reward the kids with tea or something sweet.
The loop around Štrbské pleso
A flat lakeside path with views of the peaks. Pram-friendly; allow a leisurely hour with stops for photos.
Popradské pleso on the tarmac road
A wide tarmac road leads from Štrbské Pleso to Popradské pleso — ideal with a pram. At the top there's a hut with a kitchen and a lake straight out of a fairy tale.
Skalnaté pleso by cable car
When little legs give up: the cable car from Tatranská Lomnica carries the whole family up to Skalnaté pleso (1,751 m) — high-mountain views with no walking at all.
Choosing by your children's age
With toddlers in a carrier, go for short loops with a guaranteed reward at the end — the waterfalls from Hrebienok or the shore of Štrbské pleso. Preschoolers enjoy walking on their own if the route keeps them entertained: the tarmac road to Popradské pleso works well, giving them space and safety. School-age kids can handle a longer day and love an “adventure” — the cable-car ride to Skalnaté pleso, sledging at Hrebienok or their first steps on skis. The golden rule: plan a shorter route than you'd do on your own, and leave room for play, ice cream and rest. A happy child is half the battle of a successful trip.
When it rains or you need a change
- TrickLandia in Starý Smokovec — a gallery of optical illusions kids never want to leave (a stone's throw from us).
- Poliankovo in Tatranská Polianka — a digital gallery full of projections and mirrors, two stops on the railway.
- AquaCity Poprad — pools and slides for a whole day.
- Belianska Cave and the Treetop Walk in Bachledova Valley — a half-day trip.
You'll find more ideas in our overview of nearby attractions.
Winter with kids
The sledging run from Hrebienok is legendary, and in the winter half of the year the Tatra Ice Dome rises there too. Little skiers love the gentle Jakubkova lúka slope — 350 metres from our house; bigger ones prefer the resorts in Lomnica and at Štrbské Pleso. We've written it all up in the skiing section.
Even without skis, winter here is a joy: sledging, snowball fights and a walk across snow-covered Hrebienok make for some of the best childhood memories. The waterfalls are reachable year-round, and in frost they turn into a glittering ice gallery that enchants young and old.
Tips from us, the parents
- For forest trails a carrier beats a pram — the exceptions are Štrbské and Popradské pleso.
- The TEŽ railway ride is an attraction for kids, not a transfer. Sit by the window on the right heading towards Štrbské Pleso.
- Layers: summer down below, it can blow up high. A spare hoodie never hurts.
- An apartment with a fully equipped kitchen and dishwasher makes a holiday with kids much easier — our largest, Palace and Gerlach, are built exactly for families.
Parents' FAQ
Over the years we've collected the questions we hear from parents most often — from choosing the right trail and planning a rainy day to which apartment makes the holiday easiest. Here are our answers from experience.
From what age does it make sense to bring children to the High Tatras?
You can set out for the Tatras at any age — with a baby in a carrier or with a schoolkid. For the littlest ones choose short, flat trails and cable cars; older children manage full-day trips. The key isn't age but adjusting the pace and length of the route to the youngest member of the expedition.
Which Tatra trails are suitable with a pram?
Best of all the loop around Štrbské pleso and the wide tarmac road from Štrbské Pleso to Popradské pleso — both flat, safe and scenic. On the forest trails in the Studená dolina valleys a child carrier is more practical than a pram.
Where can children stand on skis for the first time in the Tatras?
The gentle Jakubkova lúka slope is ideal — just 350 metres from Villa Severka. Bigger and more advanced kids will enjoy the resorts in Tatranská Lomnica and at Štrbské Pleso. More in our skiing overview.
How to keep children busy when it rains?
There's plenty to do below the Tatras even in the rain: the TrickLandia illusion gallery in Starý Smokovec, the digital Poliankovo, the pools and slides of AquaCity Poprad, or Belianska Cave. A rainy day is also perfect for relaxing in the apartment, where you'll find favourite board games too.
Which Villa Severka apartment is best for a family?
For families we recommend our largest apartments — the two-room Gerlach and the spacious Palace (for up to 8 people). Both have a fully equipped kitchen with a dishwasher, which makes a holiday with kids much easier.
Can a family holiday in the Tatras work without a car?
Yes — and many families prefer it that way. Arrive by train in Nový Smokovec, and the electric railway takes you to all the resorts from there. No parking hunt, and kids love the train ride.
Is it worth booking cable cars and attractions in advance?
In high season (July–August), yes — especially the cable cars and popular attractions like AquaCity; you'll save yourself the queueing with impatient children. You don't need a reservation for the Hrebienok funicular or the electric railway.
A family holiday without compromises
Spacious apartments with kitchens, parking included and a ski meadow around the corner. Kids are welcome!
